I have a 2001 Acura RSX. I am finally replacing the tires on it after 50,000 miles. I don’t really understand the difference between the classification of tires. I am looking for something cheap and relatively quiet. I’m no speed demon, so performance isn’t high on the list for me. Thanks.

Just go with an all-season tire. Their rubber compounds are meant to take a lot of miles and their tread patterns will be able to handle any kind of weather.

you are right on the performance tires. luxury is the comfortable and quiet tire. all-season is the tire that works in rain, snow, what-have-you. as for cheap, depends on the manufacturer, not the type of tire. good luck.

Tread design and ride. Based on your comment you do not need a performance tire, as these are for high speed (80+) all season is for mud and snow as well as summer use and may not ride as quietly as a luxury tire. Getting a cheap tire is relative, i.e. best to look at the guarantee and figure out the cost per mile (divide cost of tire by mileage guarantee) Inital cost may be more but over the life of the tire it will be less expensive and perhaps a safer tire..Also check what you get for price, like free rotation, flat repair etc.

Then avoid Peformance tires – they are just that: for driving fast & aggressive cornering – not usually very good in rain & horrible in snow. All seasons are best if you live in an are that gets a lot of rain and any snow. Luxury will give the smoothest, quietest ride – and usually has some decent grip for rain, too. Tell them you want a good tire in a cheaper price range – they know what is good or bad. Some higher end manufactuers make a second line, lesser known brand that is just as good, but costs less. You don’t want the super-cheap, always out-of-balance kind!
When I wanted to buy all-seasons for my Mustang GT, the guy at the tire place tried hard to twist my arm to put on performance tires like it had – I had to convince him I just drive normally 95% of the time, and needed the extra grip for when it snowed. I think it broke his heart to mount those ‘fuddy-duddy’ tires on that ’stang! -

a tire is a tire.as long as it has great tread. buy an all season for your car.luxury tires are not for only cads lincolns etc but if you have the money buy them.you can get any tire you want but the all season is for all year.

it sounds like luxury tires would have reduced noise, all-seasons would perform in all weather, and performance would be faster/more grip, but optimal in dryer conditions.

Performance, mainly. If you want the quietest and smoothest ride, choose luxury. All-season tires will work best in an area that has all 4 seasons, so you wouldn’t really need them in the south where you don’t get much snow. Performance tires will hold the road best but are usually made of a softer material and wear out quickest.
The difference in all 3 is rubber compound and tread patterns.
